14 questions

How do I request a consultation?

Use the consultation form to share your details, concerns and, if available, any imaging or records. The team will contact you to discuss the next steps.

Can I have an online consultation?

An initial online consultation may be possible, particularly for international patients, following review of your records and imaging. A full in-person assessment is normally required before surgery.

Am I too old for jaw surgery?

Orthognathic surgery is performed in adults of a wide range of ages. Suitability depends on general health, the diagnosis and treatment goals rather than age alone.

Will jaw surgery change how I look?

Moving the jaws can change facial proportions and the profile. The expected changes are discussed during planning, and 3D simulation may be used to help visualise the plan in selected cases.

My jaw clicks. Do I need surgery?

Clicking on its own, without pain or limitation, is common and usually does not require surgery. An assessment can help determine whether any treatment is needed.

Is a chin implant the same as genioplasty?

No. A chin implant adds material over the bone, while a genioplasty repositions the patient’s own chin bone. Each has different indications, which are discussed individually.

Should my wisdom teeth be removed?

Not all wisdom teeth need removal. Removal is considered when they cause problems or are at risk of doing so, based on clinical and radiographic assessment.

Will I need braces before jaw surgery?

In most cases, yes. Orthodontic treatment before surgery positions the teeth so that the jaws can be placed into a stable, functional bite. Selected cases may be suitable for a surgery-first approach; this is discussed individually.

Will there be visible scars?

Most orthognathic procedures are performed through incisions inside the mouth, so external scars are uncommon. Some procedures may require a small external incision, which would be discussed beforehand.

How long does the whole treatment take?

Including orthodontics, the full course of treatment often extends over a period of one to two years or more. The surgical phase itself is a small part of this timeline.

Does every jaw joint problem need surgery?

No. The majority of TMJ symptoms improve with non-surgical care. Surgery is reserved for selected conditions where there is a clear structural or mechanical cause.

What imaging will I need?

MRI is commonly used to assess the disc and soft tissues, while CBCT or CT is used to assess bone. The imaging requested depends on the clinical findings.

Can facial procedures be combined with jaw surgery?

Some procedures, such as genioplasty, are commonly combined with jaw surgery. Others are better performed at a later stage once swelling has settled. This is decided individually.

Do I need a referral?

Referral requirements depend on your location and healthcare system. Patients and referring clinicians are welcome to use the consultation form to discuss next steps.
