Before surgery
You will usually be admitted on the day of surgery. The anaesthetic team will review your health, and the surgical team will confirm the plan and consent with you.
In the operating room
Orthognathic surgery is performed under general anaesthesia. Most incisions are placed inside the mouth. The jaws are repositioned according to the surgical plan — often guided by a surgical splint — and fixed with small titanium plates and screws.
Waking up
You will wake in a recovery area where your comfort, breathing and swelling are monitored. Cold therapy and medication help manage swelling and discomfort. Most patients stay in hospital for one or more nights.
